Understood: A Site for Parents

There is a new parent website on the scene for parents whose children, ages 3-20, are struggling with learning and attention issues. Fifteen nonprofit organizations have joined forces to support parents of the one in five children with learning and attention issues. This site is a great referral for your parents to help them learn and advocate for their children. It's also a great way to build relationships and share information with those parents who believe that their child's school doesn't always have their child's best interest in mind.

Enjoy and create extraordinary parent relationships!

GLSEN's No Name Calling Week

GLSEN has deemed January 19 - 23 as No Name Calling Week. A week to heighten awareness of creating safe schools. Students have an opportunity to help facilitate this environment by creating a culture of acceptance for ALL students, regardless of race, religion, sexual identity, physical characteristics, gender identity, etc. There are free lesson plans and activity ideas on the GLSEN website. My district has mandated that all middle and high schools participate. I am excited to see the outcome!

The Great Kindness Challenge

A few months ago, I came across this organization. I shared it with my director and we are now mandating it in all of our elementary schools! The challenge occurs January 26 - 30th. It is free to join. If all the schools in your division join, you can receive a special designation. Your students sign a pledge, there is a checklist for your school to follow, they even have t-shirts, etc. that your staff and students can wear during that week! Some of the counselors in my division have planned special morning announcements, special activities during the week and created Kind Clubs where students pick a behavior each month for all students to model, just to name a few. Some schools have even added it to their school's improvement plan!

This is an extraordinary way to teach a character trait!
